Indiana Intercollegiates Video Highlights

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue University women's cross country team announced themselves as the top team in the state on Friday, winning the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships, held at the Purdue Varsity Cross Country course. The men's squad was stellar as well, placing third overall.

Sophomore Katie Morrical won the women's race for the Boilermakers, posting a Purdue course record, a new personal best and the seventh fastest time ever by a Purdue woman in the Indiana Intercollegiates, crossing the line in 17:39.20. Her time was almost five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Alison Bishel of Ball State, and shattered the previous course mark by nearly 19 seconds. Fellow sophomore Kristin Phillips was the Boilermakers' second finisher, placing fifth overall with a time of 17:56.59, which also bests the previous course record. First-year Kristina Krasich and senior Danielle Ginther snagged 11th and 12th place, respectively, with times of 18:26.77 and 18:30.23, while sophomore Ashlee Lengacher rounded out the top five in 20th place with a personal-best mark of 18:47.44

The Old Gold and Black totaled 49 points to take the women's crown, finishing 25 points ahead of second place Ball State University. Indiana University, DePauw University and Indiana State University summed up the women's top five. This marks the second time in the last four years the Boilermakers won the women's title, as they also won in 2004.

On the men's side, sophomore Matt De Silva placed fourth overall to lead Purdue, notching a time of 25:10.90. His time was a personal best and just four seconds shy of the Purdue course record. Walk-on freshman Robert Shiflett stormed on to the scene, running a time of 26:05.92 and placing 23rd, while classmate Jacob Laird was 31st in 26:14.25. Rookie Alex Folk was 37th in 26:22.38 and junior Steve Swank closed out the Boilermakers' scoring in 42nd with a time of 26:26.04.

Indiana University's Jordan Kyle won the individual championship, setting a course record with a time of 24:39.34. However, the Hoosiers fell short of the team crown, which was captured by Indiana State University with a score of 47 points. Indiana was second with 55, Purdue placed third with 136, Southern Indiana came in fourth with 138 and Butler claimed the final spot in the top five with 186.

Boilermaker freshman Erika Utter captured the women's open title, breaking the tape in 19:21.77. Teammate Aimee Gingerich was close behind in second at 19:23.54, and unattached runner Haleigh Lehman was third in 19:34.20. Purdue captured seven of the top eight spots in the women's open race.

The men's open race was dominated by unattached runners as Sean Bowman finished first in 25:40.78, Keith Solverson was second in 26:08.91 and former Boilermaker Justin Stadt was third in 26:23.05. The top collegiate runner was Indiana's Tom Martin, who finished fifth in 26:47.15. The Boilermakers' lone entry, freshman Tim Lyons, was ninth in 27:16.40.
