WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue men's basketball coach Gene Keady hosted the 14th annual Gene Keady-Emerson Kampen Golf Classic on Tuesday, at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex at Purdue University in West Lafayette.

Over $40,000 was raised for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Over 180 golfers participated in the scramble, which featured a live and silent auction.

Keady was happy to see a great turnout.

"I am always delighted to be able to host this event," said Keady, now in his 23rd year at Purdue. "It's been a pleasure to work with the Kampens and everyone involved in this event. We had a great time out here today and I want to thank everyone for coming out and playing."

Keady was joined by former Michigan State head coach Jud Heathcote, who played in Keady's group and gave a special presentation at dinner.

Heathcote led the Spartans to the 1979 National Championship. He retired in 1995 as Michigan State's all-time winningest coach with a 340-220 record in 19 seasons.

Heathcote told many jokes and spoke highly of Keady. He also mentioned the great work that the people at The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation perform at fund-raising events.

"It was a wonderful day and evening and the people here are first class," said Heathcote. "My friend Gene and the people associated with this event did a great job."

    Keady echoed Heathcote's thoughts.

"It's an honor to be a part of something like this that can benefit so many people," said Keady. "The best part of the day was that we had a great time and raised a lot of money in the process that hopefully will benefit a lot of people."

Kim Berry of The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation said for the 14th year the event was a tremendous success.

"The people at this event every year are great to work with," said Berry. "Coach Keady and the Kampens are always fantastic and we couldn't do it without them. Once again we have raised over $40,000, which goes to research to help find a cure."
