WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team opened its dual match season by defeating DePaul 7-0 today at the Lafayette Sports Center. The Boilermakers picked up the doubles point with wins of 8-6, 8-2 and 8-1. All but one singles match went Purdue's way in straight sets. At No. 6, Lara Burgarello defeated Melanee Allego 6-0, 6-1, and Shawna Zuccarini bested Stephanie Matko 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5. At No. 4, Alyssa Rodriguez beat Karen Falduto by identical 6-2 scores. Hala Sufi defeated Natalie Matko 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot, and at No. 2 singles Amy Walgenbach beat Brenda Leung 7-5, 6-2. In the closest match of the day, Gretchen Haynor defeated Marina Parashkevova 6-7, 6-3, 10-8 at No. 1 singles to complete the sweep. The loss drops DePaul to 1-2 on the season and gets the Boilermakers off to a 1-0 start. Coach Mat Iandolo and the women's team return to action tonight at 6:30 against the RedHawks of Miami (Ohio).
